The SMF Emergency Department is a single-stop facility with a full spectrum of services. We were one of the first hospitals in this country to recognize the need for a round-the-clock centre for managing emergencies. The department provides treatment for a wide range of conditions - traffic accidents, burns, poisonings, acute medical emergencies like heart attacks and strokes. It handles adults and children, on a "24/7" basis. About 30% of all admissions to the hospital come through the Emergency Department. The department receives close to 20,000 patients a year.
The Emergency Department (ED) at Dr Rangarajan Memorial Hospital caters to adult emergencies. For children and young adults below the age of 18, the Emergency Room in SMF children’s hospital at 17th Main road is available, The SMF Emergency Department is based on well-tested international model of emergency care:- Triage: patients who visit the ED have their chief complaints and vitals signs checked at arrival. Based on these the patients are sorted according to the seriousness and urgency of the problems into 4 categories:
- Class I & II are life threatening and are seen immediately by the team of doctors
- Class III patients are stable. They are admitted to the ED. Further tests are done and treatment given
- Class IV patients have minor complaints and illness, though not urgent, they need to attended on the same day
- Fast track clinic:
- Fast Track Emergency Outpatient Clinic at the ER caters to the need of patients in Class IV, These patients are seen by a doctor in the clinic and treatment is given as outpatient
- Facilities available:
- The Emergency Room has 9 beds.
- It has a state-of-the-art resuscitation room with 2 cots that are used to revive cardiac arrests, seriously injured accident victims and other life - threatening conditions.
- There are 2 ambulatory cots for patients who have less serious problems.
- A highly qualified consultant with a large experience of treating acutely ill patients heads the ED. A team of doctors, nurses and and para-medical staff are in the ED at all times
- It is backed up by the entire range of diagnostic and treatment facilities, from simple blood tests, to ECG and x-rays and to ultrasound and CT scans.
- All basic and specialized consultancy services are provided by our carefully selected, highly trained panel of doctors.
Hours of service and access to care - The Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
- No prior appointments are needed. All emergencies are seen on a walk-in basis. However, the approach to patients is on the principle of "most lethal goes first" and not "first come first served". Minor complaints and illnesses may be made to wait depending on the situation.
