Laboratory Services
The Laboratory services are organised as 4 major divisions. All the four divisions have been certified by NABL.
  • Microbiology
  • Histopathology
  • Clinical biochemistry
  • Clinical pathology

The department is manned by qualified microbiologist who also heads the laboratory services.

Hours of service and access

Biochemistry, Clinical Pathology and Microbiology laboratories work 24 hours a day, through the year. The Histopathology laboratory functions from 8 AM to 5 PM on all week days (Monday - Saturday).

Microbiology

The Microbiology laboratory is manned by 2 qualified microbiologists and assisted by 7 trained technicians. Facilities available include:

Bacteriology: Automated bacterial/fungal identification and sensitivity testing system.

  • A) Standard staining techniques
  • B) Culture of blood , urine, stool, sputum, pus, other body fluids and C) Antibiotic sensitivity testing by standard disc diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) technique/E-test strips

Mycology:

  • Fungal Culture
  • Fungal mounts

Serology:

  • Regular Serological tests to detect:
  • Typhoid fever - Widal test
  • Sexually transmitted diseases - VDRL, TPHA
  • Hepatitis 'B' virus infection - HBsAg (ELISA), Anti HBs levels,
  • Hepatitis 'C' Virus infection - Anti HCV IgG Ab
  • HIV - ELISA test and Western Blot
  • Leptospirosis - ELISA - IgM Ab
  • Dengue Fever - ELISA & card test - IgM & IgG Ab
  • and others (i.e.,) TORCH Panel Serology, Cold Agglutination, Paul-Bunnel

Food & water samples for bacteriological analysis: offered to other hospitals, industries etc.

Diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection from endoscopic biopsy specimens

Special stains:

  • - for Cryptosporidium in stool specimens
  • - for Pneumocystis carinii in respiratory secretions

Sterility checking - operation theatres. Offered to outside hospitals/ nursing homes. Trained technologist sent for sample collection from our microbiology laboratory

Immunoflorescence techniques:

  • Auramine –rhodamine stain for AFB
  • Calcoflow white stain for fungus/pneumocystis carini
  • ANA

The Biochemistry Lab is manned by 2 qualified biochemists, assisted by 28 technicians working (in rotation) in different shifts. It performs routine qualitative and quantitative analysis of blood, urine and other body fluids as well as Renal & gallbladder calculi and Hormones analysis. It also performs sample collection for various tests, both in Main and Annexe Hospital(Lab Sample Collection), and transports the samples to various sections of the lab. It collects lab reports from Main Hospital and dispatches to both Inpatient and Outpatients of Annexe.

Clinical Pathology Lab is manned by 3 qualified Pathologists, assisted by 28 technicians(rotated for Biochemistry and Blood Bank) also working in different shifts.

Clinical Pathology Lab performs qualitative and quantitative analysis on body fluids such as-blood, urine and spinal fluids as well as feces and semen.

Blood Bank Satellite Unit - Blood bags are received from Jeevan Blood Bank and stored. Grouping and cross matching is done by qualified well trained technicians, under the supervision of Blood Bank Medical Officer and the bags are issued to patients treated by SMF Consultants.

Histopathology Lab performs microscopic study of tissues affected by disease. Biopsy and Cytology specimens is sent are processed and slides are prepared which are reported upon.
