Anesthesia

The Department of Anaesthesiology is a round the clock service. The anesthesia department consists of four full-time consultant and three visiting consultants. The operating rooms are equipped with anaesthesia machines, which meet safety standards and monitors as required by the American Society of Anaesthesiologists.

Facilities available:

  • Pre-operative assessment: All patients are evaluated extensively prior to the administration of anesthesia, both at the assessment clinic (9am - 6 pm, Mon - Sat) and also in the rooms and wards. The anaesthetic plan and the risks involved are explained to the patient.
  • Administration of anaesthesia: The anesthetic technique is planned appropriately for each patient depending on the surgical procedure, the condition of the patient, and the availability of drugs. Several anesthetic techniques are offered.
  • For general anesthesia, modern anesthetic agents with minimal side effects are used. Each patient is monitored continuously during the procedure. The laryngeal mask airway is used widely.
Regional anesthetic techniques performed include spinal, epidural, and caudal anesthesia, as well as nerve blocks. Narrow gauge needles are used for administering spinal anesthesia to reduce side effects. Monitored anesthesia care is used for patients undergoing surgery under local anaesthesia.
  • Post-operative care: All patients who undergo surgery under anaesthesia are observed in the recovery room until they are awake. Care is taken to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting and adequate post-operative pain relief is provided to every patient.
  • Other services:
  • Labour analgesia (epidural)
    Anaesthesia for CT scans

Postgraduate education and CME activities:

  • The Department is approved by the National Board of Examinations for postgraduate training in Anaesthesia.
  • The Department conducts regular CME programmes and participates in all regional and national anaesthesia meetings.
