| For the second year
in succession CANSTOP organized a 3-day public exhibition on cancer
awareness called "All 'bout Cancer (ABC)". Science and
spirituality were brought together by Prof. Timothy Hunt (Nobel
Laureate 2001) who spoke on cancer cells & Prof. Prema Pandurangan on
the role of spirituality in handling cancer. Over 100 school children
participated in the Onco Quiz. |

| Emergency Accident Relief Centre (EARC) |
In partnership with the Government of Tamilnadu & BHEL, Ranipet, SMF has set-up an EARC on the Chennai - Bangalore highway, at Thiruvallam near Chittoor & Ranipet. This centre will provide much needed 24-hour help to accident victims by giving first aid & transporting them to the nearest hospital for further treatment. An exclusive toll free helpline "1033" had been set up by the Government for this purpose. |
| CINRG (Co-operative International Neuromuscular Research Group) |
Co-operative International Neuromuscular Research Group (CINRG): Dr.V.Viswanathan, Pediatric Neurologist, has been appointed as an investigator by the Children's National Medical Centre, Washington for conducting an international study on 'muscle strength assessment' in children afflicted with muscular dystrophy. 16 centres from all over the world have been set up for this purpose. |
| Diabetic foot research | In partnership with IIT, Chennai & Brakes India rubber division, SMF is working on developing footwear suitable for patients afflicted with diabetes. Development of the appropriate rubber compound with the right softness and hardness is the key in making inexpensive shoes which can avoid expensive surgical treatments and high morbidity for the patients. |
| Rural Medical Centre | SMF had entered into a partnership with MR Omayal Achi & MR Arunachalam Trust in assisting them run the rural medical centre at Arakkambakkarn. This centre is near Avadi and caters to the 25 villages around the centre. |
| TB eradication | SMF is partnering with the Resource Group for Education & Advocacy for Community Health (REACH) as a centre for the Directly Observed Treatment, short course (DOTS) program for TB eradication in and around Anna Nagar. |
| Akash workshop | "Akash" the Centre for Cerebral Palsy held a 2-day National workshop on Management of Cerebral Palsy. Aimed at physicians, physiotherapists, educators and care givers providing treatment to these children, the program was very well received. |
| LABS | SMF helps the 'Corporate Consortium on livelihood' in their 'LABS' project (Livelihood Advancement Business School). This scheme trains unemployed youth from very low socioeconomic background as various technicians to help them stand on their own feet. |
| FORUM 2003 | The sixth in a line of very successful CME programmes aimed at primary care providers, FORUM 2003 was very well attended. Delegate satisfaction with the content of the programme continues to remain very high. |
| Medical Records workshop | To highlight the importance of medical records, SMF in partnership with Madras Medical Mission Hospital conducted a national workshop on 'Challenges to the Medical Records Profession'. This was attended by over 350 delegates from all over India. |
| Land acquisition | For the next Phase of hospital expansion, 2 acres (36.3 grounds) of land situated very close to the hospital was purchased on 11th September 2002. |
| Headache clinic | In its continued search for excellence SMF has put together an exclusive headache evaluation clinic. (Click here for more...) |
| Sankara Nethralaya tie-up | SMF is partnering with Sankara Nethralaya. Dr.K.Krishnakumar, Head of the Department, ENT, has been appointed as a Visiting Consultant at Sankara Nethralaya to do ENT related procedures. Surgical services commenced in March '03. |

| Equipment additions | The year saw three
major events.

| TV security monitoring | For improving security at the hospital, a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system for 24-hour monitoring of the entire hospital has been commissioned. The cameras have been installed in 18 strategic locations inside the hospital. |
